Fraser Coast Flats Fishing

Prevailing winds from the North West over the last month has made bay fishing difficult to say the least.
Late November gave us a brief window of light northerlys in the mornings and a chance to hit the flats.
Fraser coast has one of the best saltwater sight fisheries in the country. With good tides, clear skies and a little luck the sight casting to golden trevally is world class.

Working the flats in 2-3 feet of water and watching these fish stand on end to munch on a yabbie is enough to get the heart racing

And if the north westerlys keep you off the flats there are always other options-
Here's Lyn with a fat Hervey Mack Tuna spun up on a Snapback in November

Tuna Spinning Moreton Bay

Wednesday morning brought good weather and fantastic boating conditions- ideal for a day in the bay. With rumours of early season Tuna arriving in the South East the boys ventured out for a spin.

In recent weeks large bait schools have moved into the Southern Bay bringing various types of Tuna with them. Bonito, Watson's Leaping Bonito and Mac Tuna are making up most of the numbers with both resident and migratory Long Tails working large bait fish on current lines and channel ledges.

Both Mucho Lucir and Smith Metal Forecast chrome lures accounted for the smaller Tuna species; the larger fish of the day fell to Snapback soft plastics and an amazing surface strike on a Yozuri Hydro Pencil.

For any information regarding Tuna Spinning and tackle requirements come in and see us at Jones's Tackle.

Customer Jigging Trip

September 13th saw the Jones's Tackle crew and customers heading off Cape Moreton on another jigging foray. The game plan was to fish the shallow reefs chasing Amberjack & Kingfish on the lighter jig tackle. This type of light jigging is mostly using 100-200 gram jigs and some of the best fun you’ll ever have with a jig outfit. Schooling fish and light gear can make for fast and furious action. After this we headed out to deep marks in 100-150m to rustle up some Pearlies and Kings. Boat skills are really important out here; pinpoint positioning using sounder and GPS is a must to get your jig amongst the fish. The Kingfish at this depth are often only slightly bigger than the shallow water schooling fish but the Pearlies can be XOS with 3-4kg specimens not uncommon.

A range of jig styles were practised and refined on the day; the less experienced jiggers on board took home new techniques that will do wonders for their confidence and catch rate in the future.

Jones’s Tackle offers jigging trips for customers who have purchased their gear through the store. Anglers with any level of experience are welcome; a typical group on board will range from first timers to seasoned jiggers.
Experienced staff members are always on hand to help with rigging and jigging techniques.

Through Winter 2009, the jigging has been fantastic, with big Amberjack being plentiful, as well as smaller ones, Yellowtail Kingfish in abundance and numerous Pearl Perch.
The season started out well, with a number of trips out in our own boat scoring good sized Amberjack between 1m-1.2m all released in good condition.
Jigging is always such a buzz, due to the fact that large fish are often caught within seconds of the first jig being dropped to the bottom. So often, when using quality jigs a strike occurs almost instantly, with the resulting adrenaline rush helping to provide the energy required to muscle the fish to the surface. Spin reels like the Stella 20 000 have the pulling power to get these large fish under control and to the boat in best condition for release. High speed retrieve
is not required, as maximum time working the jig in the target area is achieved with a slower speed retrieve. It also delivers the guts to fight these larger fish who have the ability to brick you in the first few seconds of the battle.
There have also been large numbers of smaller Amberjack and Yellowtail Kingfish in the area. They just love jigs and put up a fight much bigger than their size. With these, it is important to remember the new sizing and bag limits, which is 75cm for Amberjack and 60cm for Kingfish, and maximum bag limit of 2 for Amberjack and Samsonfish combined, and 2 for Yellowtail Kingfish.
This makes it important to take care with all fish that are to be released, so as not to je
opardise our future fishery.
Large Amberjack should always be released, as the eating quality is not worth the death of a fish so valuable to the fishery. Pearl Perch on the other hand are beautiful eating and are fun to target on jig. A different jig style is generally required, and a slower, steady retrieve of a hooked fish is essential.
Pop in and see us for more information on our customer jigging trips that are back in full swing. Customers who have purchased their jig gear with us, are invited to join us on board a local charter boat with 2 of our staff to assist with info on techniques and to help with knot tying,
jig selection etc.
We have just completed two customer jig trips with hot bites from Amberjack and Kingfish on both occasions.
At some stages through the day multiple hook ups resulted in everyone battling frisky fish at the same time. This certainly kept the deckie on his toes as most fish were being released in good condition.

Goldens' Galore
Posted by Steve

In early July the boys ventured to the pristine waters of Hervey Bay in an attempt to close the lid on the 08/09 Golden Trevally season. June/July traditionally sees the Goldens move off the flats and into the deeper waters of the bay. These fish typically range between 80-95cm and are fantastic sport on light tackle. The results were ones normally dreamt of with 46 Goldens caught over 3 days. Throw in 2 lovely Queenfish, sight casted in very shallow water and countless other trevally species. It was a trip to remember.

For any information regarding the light tackle Hervey Bay Sport Fishery and techniques, drop in and see the crew at Jones's Tackle.

Jigging Trip 17-05-09

Lyn and Neil ventured out on Sunday for some Autumn jigging.
We encountered some quality Amberjack and also found big schools of smaller A.J's that kept us occupied for a few hours.
Hots Keitan jigs in the bigger sizes up to 250g along with 200g Smith Tachyume jigs on the lighter gear worked a treat.
These are rapidly becoming our goto jigs for Amberjack.
You really have to see the finish on these jigs, no wonder the fish love them.

The other gear used was our much cherished Smith jig rods and Stella reels.

For any advice on jigging drop in and see Lyn, Neil or Steve.

Pelagics in May

Traditionally May is fast fish time in South East Queensland and this year hasn't disappointed.
The long tails have been scarce with the first of the westerly wind arriving, however this should improve over the coming weeks.
Recent trips in both Northern Moreton Bay and Hervey Bay have been turbulent at times but persistence and a little know-how has put a few hefty specimens in the boat.

For all the latest advice and tackle for catching pelagic pop in and see the crew at Jones's Tackle.
Dont forget to mention Happy Birthday to receive your discount and slice of birthday cake.
